Pekingese dogs were first shown in Britain in 1893. Their luxurious appearance with a long coat, large eyes, and an air of self-esteem around them indicated a real royalty and provided for much success. Undoubtedly, they were the focus of any show and public event and the desired pet for wealthy people.

The daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, Miss Alice Roosevelt, and a wealthy financier named J. P. Morgan were presented Pekingese dogs by a Chinese empress. Many are sure to have envied them for Pekingese dogs were a rare breed at that time. Gradually, the number of dogs increased in the United States and more people could afford buying a Pekingese dog.

Devotion to its owners, the ease of upkeep, and splendid looks of the Pekingese have provided for much popularity. The dog suited well for apartment living and was a perfect companion for those who had to travel much. Indeed, what can prevent a traveler from taking a tiny quiet dog along with him, thus avoiding sad moments of parting?

By the 1909, the number of Pekingese fanciers was great enough to establish the first breed club in America. J. P. Morgan became the honorary president of the club since he had done much for the breed and was he club's main sponsor. The active President of the Pekingese Club of America was Mrs. Mandy, a lady who is thought to be the founder of the club.

It was agreed that the official breed standard should be similar to the one coined by the Pekingese Club of England founded in 1904. Later, the standard was revised a few times, the last one presenting a more precise version of what the Pekingese should look like.

Breed clubs that were established later in Europe accepted the standard and encouraged the associate breeders to follow it to achieve the desired ideal. The Pekingese Club of France was founded in 1924. Denmark has acquired Pekingese Club in 1988. Nowadays, breed clubs all over the world do their best to ensure success in breeding and showing Pekingese dogs and allowing the pubic learn more about this ancient breed.
