Breeding techniques have altered enormously since the times of Chinese royalty. It is known that Chinese emperors, the exclusive owners of the Pekingese, based their breeding techniques on magical notions and very often employed cruel means. Thus, puppies are said to have been put into tiny cages to stop their growth and achieve diminutive size. The color of walls where the dogs were bred was sometimes considered the basic factor that determines the future litter's color pattern.
